ARTIST STATEMENT

I express my inner most thoughts and ideas through the creation of movement. I convey the images that influence me the most such as art, nature and personal experiences and apply them to my creative process to help provoke new movement. This allows me to share my unique perspective of art, dance and film with the world through contemporary/modern dance. My choreography consists of abstract, nonliteral movement that contains components of athleticism, lines and a sense of being grounded. My biggest element in choreography is the use of language. I take words and translate them into movement, whether that is plainly spelling the word out with my body or metaphorically shaping that word.  In order to allow the audience to draw their own conclusions about my work, I leave the concepts open for interpretation.  I use improvisation as an authentic movement generation tool that gives the audience a more authentic experience. As an artist, when I am given the freedom to improvise, the work becomes more vulnerable and relatable.  This tool allows the audience to indulge in a raw experience that is occurring specifically for them in that moment. The audience will leave my performance/show with a sense of wholeness and reality. I want my story to become their story, even if it’s just for a moment.
